Day 41 – La Portela de Valcarce to O Cebreiro

We are in O Cebreiro! I’m starting the blog tonight with a picture taken at Mass in the church in O Cebreiro. The pilgrims Mass was at 7PM tonight. The priest was a young man and before he started he asked for assistance from those in attendance that could speak another language to assist. He picked me for English and I was asked to read the first reading and also read his homily in English.  What a privilege!

It was an emotional experience.
The homily I was asked to read.

After Mass the priest asked all the pilgrims to come up and form a circle around the altar. I’d estimate there were about 50 of us. He then asked me and the other language assistants to read another prayer. Afterwards he gave each pilgrim a gift; a stone with a yellow arrow painted on it to remind us to follow the way. This was a really special evening.

After Mass he handed out a stone as a gift to all pilgrims.

We made it over the beast of a mountain. It was uphill all day but now we are in the mountain village of O Cebreiro.  This small town has the distinction of being the second most popular starting point on the Camino probably because it is mostly downhill from here and about 1 week from Santiago de Compostela. Remember we are starting week 7!

No more climbs like this.

The great part of this village of course is the view. It is our reward for the climb.

Apparently it gets foggy here and some people never see the view. We started at the bottom today so far you can’t see it.

We are seeing evidence of the pilgrim invasion with people getting out of taxis and looking all refreshed and excited for their first day on the Camino.

Lots of pilgrims coming in – Probably about a $50 taxi ride to get here from a bigger city.
We are now in Galacia, the last province!
We fed this dog part of our lunch.
I’ll update the location of this church later.
This priest started the yellow arrow painting to show the direction of the Camino.
Not sure who Janice is sitting next to. We will research it later.
