Day 4 – Espinal to Zubiri (updated Post Camino)

Distance 10.24 miles  5.5 hours easy to moderate

In Espinal we stayed in a private room and ended up having the whole 2nd story to ourselves.  Originally we planned to stay in an albergue but we didn’t like the looks of the one we booked. Espinal was a good choice since it was a short hike the day before and we had to rest before today’s 10.25 miles, our longest so far. Last night we shed 7 lbs of stuff from our packs which helped make today’s walk much better.

We really don’t get a lot of time in these places since we are always on the move. So far they are all really small villages separated a couple miles apart and they are charming.

8:30AM Saturday and nobody was around.

We left without breakfast hoping to find  a bar/cafe for something to eat. The path out of town came quickly and the beauty of the countryside took our minds off our hunger.

A lot of scenery like this today

Although most of the day was downill there were a few strenuous uphills. After a while we came to a view spot that made the uphills worth it. In some areas it looked like Eugene Oregon.

We were so happy here. The view and weather were perfect.
Even though we got rid of stuff our backpacks were still too heavy.

We came upon a small village at 10am and had a ham and cheese omelet. It was a small bar/cafe that had three tables and held about 12 people. The food was delicious. Afterwards the path took us through forests and pastures. It was incredibly well marked.

In the middle of nowhere and signs everywhere.
Rest anywhere I can get it. I’m not fat it’s my passport pouch! Notice our layers are off – it’s warm.
Some paths are really nice.
Gates separated the owner’s property.
Several shrines.

Today we walked slow but steadily taking in the view. We were passed by a few groups of other Camino folks all fairly young. One pilgrim in particular got our attention.

The happiest pilgrim.

There were a few path challenges.

Janice is really concentrating!
The steep downhills were a challenge.
This terrain slowed us today.
(Post Camino) – We didn’t have our Camino strength yet and we were not prepared for the hills..

The entry bridge to Zubiri.

We walk across this bridge to town and then back to the Camino tomorrow.

Our room tonight is nice and they even did our laundry for 5 Euros.

Hallway in front of our door.
Private house with about 6 guest rooms and private bathrooms

Time for dinner. Only one restaurant in town and all are welcome.

Food was good especially after 5 hours of walking and no lunch.
