Day 36 – Foncebadon to Molinaseca

Leaving Foncebadon we have now crossed two of three major Camino mountain challenges. The pass at Foncebadon was over 5000 feet and we made a steady descent of over 2500 feet into Molinaseca. Good news though since we got to use the trekking poles and they helped a lot. Foncebadon was a nice village and one that probably only survives because the Camino passes through it.

Weather was an issue again and it was snowing lightly most of the night. When we woke up the snow had stopped but it was cold, 30 degrees, and foggy. Cold is ok as long as it is dry and it was dry all day today.  So we set out for Molinaseca early.  It is a good thing we are now moving into the valley for a week since the higher elevations will get snow all weekend.

That is ice all over. We were below the snow in less than an hour.
Once out of the fog the views were great.

There were only two villages on the path today but they were beautiful.  The first, El Acebo, has a cafe at the entrance to the village so we stopped in for cafe con leche since it was still below 40 degrees outside.  Turns out the place is owned by an expat from Texas.

El Acebo, another village that survives because it is on the Camino.
There is a lot of pride in ownership of many of the small homes.
Roman bridge to the entrance of Molinaseca.
In the summer they dam the river and people jump off the bridge into the pooled water.
Molinaseca is a clean town.
San Nicholas church in Molinaseca. It is only open because a US expat named Tim volunteers to watch it all day and welcome guests.
