Day 5 – Viana do Castelo (rest day)

Today is a much needed rest day. Only 3 priorities – do laundry, go to the top of the mountain to see the church Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus / Mount of Santa Luzia and go to a very good “locals” dinner restaurant.

Of course it wouldn’t be a Camino without a few bumps and for this Camino it is rain. Normally this time of the year is very dry but today and for the next two days an atmospheric river has arrived and it is raining hard. Oh well… We have rain coats and the hotel has loaner umbrellas. The good news is all the tourists are staying in so we have the city to ourselves.

The church, Santa Lucia, is high up on the mountain above Viana. Tourists stayed away since the church is covered in a cloud. Just as we got to the top the clouds cleared and we had a great view.

As a side note. Viana do Castelo is the nicest place so far we have been in Portugal so far. It is clean and the area we are in is not over run with tourists.

Main street to our hotel.
Too many beautiful plazas to post.
Dinner with open kitchen. Smells were amazing.
Lunch. Mine cost 6 euros
Of course it is raining. Supposed to clear for 4 hours tomorrow morning as we will be walking.
There was a better view from the front but I didn’t take the picture – note the rain puddles.
Rain stopped.
Not too large inside but very beautiful.
We will walk a coastal “off Camino” route tomorrow. Probably in the rain for half of it.
