Day 13 – Caldas de Reis to Pardon(north of Pardon 2.5km)

Well as we knew today’s weather was worse – a lot worse. Yesterday it was raining, today it was pouring. Knowing we had a tough day ahead we left early, still dark out, and just accepted we would be soaked wet all day. We couldn’t check into our next place until 2PM so we thought maybe walk until 2PM and then see where we are and how we feel. 2PM came and went and 6 and a half hours and 14 miles later we arrived at our room. The Spanish civil guard was out in various spots making sure everyone was ok.

So why not just take a taxi and avoid the misery? Well two reasons – first, it is not allowed as a legitimate Camino if you don’t walk. Who would know – we would. Besides there were literally a few hundred people walking today sucking it up and getting soaked so just accept the rain – and it is a warm rain. Second reason – we have to leave our room around 9am anyway and if we took a taxi we would be at our destination in 30 minutes. Then what? We can’t check in until 3pm so we would have to stand outside somewhere for 6 hours.

You see when we leave our room at 9am we are homeless people with nowhere to go until 3pm. So walking kills the time. Normally really good time with many nice things to see along the way. Rain ruins that since all you do is a avoid mud.

if you are keeping track you know tomorrow is our last day on the Camino. 19 KM tomorrow and we see the Cathedral. Weather tomorrow looks great.

Orange is bad!
It’s actually dark out but it looks bright. Pouring rain at 8:30AM
Civil Guard posted various spots. These guys are great.
Selfie with the Guard.
Crowded crazy wet pilgrims.
The rain was bouncing off the road when it hit. At some point you just ignore the puddles.
A Camino cafe. Loaded with wet people.
Cows
People were huddled where they could find shelter. But really? Another locked church in Spain!
We walked across when the gates came down. Cool – a train.
