Day 10 – Auschwitz-Birkenau

This is an important place to visit and it is apparent that the Europeans feel so also.  There were dozens of tour buses filled with students many of them wearing Israel flags on their backs.

Auschwitz did not fall from the sky

Understanding this phrase is critical because it means the Nazis did not one day just get to the point of murdering, – murdering, 6 million people. It was a slow process starting in the 1930s to gradually introduce hate little by little until it was acceptable to watch your neighbors get taken away to be brutally murdered.

Let no one forget and do not accept hate.

After being abducted by the Nazis the people where put on train cattle cars and transported for days with standing room only, no toilets and no food and water.

Once to Auschwitz they were separated into two groups. The immediate murder group or the slave worker group. Women with children, old people, people with any kind of handicap were immediately marched to “showers” where they were gassed to death. The Nazi goal was to eventually kill them all so there was no good group.

Stay vigilant even today.

It is hard to believe there are holocaust deniers today. If you come across these people be careful – they are evil. There are no good Nazis.

The Quote to remember.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

—Martin Niemöller

Work will set you free entrance. Slaves or called  workers were marched out every day no matter what the temperature. In the winter below 0 they had no coats just thin clothes. Most died quickly once at the camp.
This looks like a nice residential area. It was not. Everyone here back then died shortly after arrival.
These are from people that most certainly died immediately upon entry.
This is hanging gallows where there were public hangings daily.
These rooms would have been filled with male prisoners sleeping on straw.
Again filled with prisoners.
Birkineau was a whole different level of killing. The crematorium were here but often they just burned the bodies outside in big piles.
This was a long train line track with long boxcars filled with people.
Every chimney was a barricks. Most were pillaged after the war by the locals to rebuild their homes.
This was the women’s side . They slept on the floor and two racks high. No heat of any kind and below 0 in the winter.
