Day 6 – Viana do Costelo – Vila Praia de Âncora

So last night we were studying the weather hoping that the forecast of rain would somehow change to beautiful sunshine. No chance. At 8AM it was drizzling and by 9AM it was a pretty good downpour. We ended up walking 12.83 miles for 6 hours and 24 minutes and it was raining pretty hard for almost 5 hours of that time. Rain adds at least 20% to the effort of the walk so when we got to Anacora we were pretty tired. We weren’t soaking wet but pretty sure we wanted to get to our hotel now!

But Anacora wasn’t our stop for the night. We got on the train to Vila Nova de Cerveira (about 15 miles). It was always our intention to come by train to Cerveira and skip a part due to dangerous walking in the area and to be able to finish in 3 weeks.

Today we walked an off Camino route along the ocean. Our hotel concierge told us about it and it was a great choice. The only downside is that it is unmarked for Camino people – no yellow arrows. After about 8 miles we lost the path and we had to divert back to the real Camino. Too bad since it added an hour or more to divert back. Turns out both routes were very nice. But adding an hour in a downpour sucks.

Sure wish we could have followed the coast.
Start of the coast. Now 5 more hours of rain.
Nice path but we were wet as ducks from the knees down.
Just keep the ocean on the left and walk north.
Still the coast path.
Inland route.
Inland route. 2 more hours of walking.
We had to sneek across this opening.
Worst restraunt ever. But it was pouring rain and town too far to walk.
